The most boisterous and colourful festival is here, almost. Sneaking into diminutive ‘gallis’ and dashing balloons, filled with colours, on one’s back is about to be a common phenomenon.

And, they say, splashing the colours for a cause at Tadwadi is earning a good fortune. The practice is 112 years old.  Nearly 10,000 women devotees will bring sarees which will be donated to old-age homes across Maharashtra. The Tadwadi Holi Utsav will be held on March 1 from 7.30 pm to 12.45 am. Like every year, the Holika will be immolated following which people will dive into the festive spirit.  Tadwadi Chor bazaar, which sees heavy footfall during Navratri, has South Mumbai’s tallest idol made at late Vijay Khatu’s workshop.

“More than ten thousands people visit the Tadwadi Utsav. The crowd starts gathering from 7:30 pm and celebrate till 12:45 pm. It will be held on March 1. Devotees offer sarees, coconut and veni. The sarees that are offered to Holika will be later given away to women in the old age home,” said Amit Bhadricha, a senior member of the mandal.

The platform will also be used to spread the word about installation of sanitary pad dispensing machines.

“The sanitary pad dispensing machine will be installed in Girgaon with the help of “Amhi Girgaonkar” team, a local group that takes up social issues.”

A group, headed by Gaurav Sagwekar, will help in the installation process. Amhi Girgaonkar is the first group that came up with the initiative. We are looking for sponsors to purchase the machine. However, if we don’t find a sponsorer, we will contribute ourselves,” said Bhadricha.
