The Navghar police have arrested a man from Bhayander for allegedly running his car over a stray dog in a posh society. Instead of showing remorse and helping the animal, Harshad Prabhakar Patil passed insensitive remarks, an animal activist has alleged.

A resident of Ramdev Park, Patil allegedly dove over his Volkswagen car over the canine on Saturday, badly injuring it. Suman Roy, who witnessed the scene, contacted animal activist Salim Charania and both of them confronted Patil.

"Despite having ample space, he purposely struck the dog. When asked to help us take the dog to the hospital, he said strays were meant to be killed. He told us that we should arrange for the transport on our own if we were concerned about its life," said Charania.

After getting the dog treated, Roy and Charania decided to approach the police. "They were pressing us to not complain and even went on to the extent of threatening us. But there was no way we could just become a mute spectator to this inhuman behaviour. This kind of cruelty must stop as strays too have the right to live like humans, said Charania.

While the dog is recuperating at an animal lover's house, a policeman from Navghar police station said they have booked Patil under Section 279 (rash driving), 429 (mischief by killing or maiming animal) of the Indian Penal Code and under Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. "We are investigating further," he said. The charges attract a maximum punishment of five years.
