The Bombay High Court on Monday continued the stay imposed on the trial of accused Sameer Gaikwad, arrested in the murder case of Govind Pansare, until August 11. The special investigating team (SIT) probing the case also mentioned to the court that their probe was underway and soon they will be questioning Virendra Tawade, who has been arrested in the murder case of Dr Narendra Dabholkar, to ascertain whether there was any planned conspiracy between the two.

While extending the stay on the trial, pending before a session's court in Kolhapur, justice Sadhana Jadhav said, "In the interest of justice, it would be proper to continue the ad interim relief already granted."

Public prosecutor Sandeep Shinde, while arguing for continuing the stay, sought to amend his plea by saying that the agency probing the Pansare murder was to question Tawde and he wanted to include the same as one of the grounds to continue the stay on the trial. The court granted permission to the government to amend its plea and posted the matter for further hearing on August 11.

Opposing the plea, advocate Sanjeev Punalekar argued that the case pertained to only Gaikwad, who was a poor man. The government was under obligation to provide a speedy trial to the accused and by denying that fundamental rights were being violated. However, the court said if the trial commenced and later the police found a connection between the two killings then would the accused face another trial? If not, then a chance has to be given to the agency to probe further.

Gaikwad is the only suspect arrested by the Kolhapur police in connection with this case. He was arrested on September 16 last year from his residence in Sangli. Pansare and his wife were shot by unidentified persons in Kolhapur during their morning walk on February 16 last year. While his wife survived, the CPI leader died in a Mumbai hospital four days later.
