To get the ambitious Dharavi redevelopment project going, the state government is now planning to form a special project vehicle (SPV) to execute the project. It will be on the lines of the BDD Chawls redevelopment project. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the decision during his television program, Mi Mukhyamantri Boltoy, on Sunday.

The redevelopment of Dharavi has been the ambition of the state government, starting from the one led by Vilasrao Deshmukh.

The Fadnavis-led government, after coming to power, floated global tenders worth Rs 21,936 crore to redevelop Dharavi. Despite three extensions, there were no takers.

The CM was replying to a question by Sanjay Shinde (resident of Dharavi) on when Dharavi would be redeveloped.

"Immediately on coming to power, we floated a global tender. We did it thrice but developers have not come ahead. It appears that the project is difficult so much that they are willing to overlook the profit part. Se we have decided to have a policy to redevelop Dharavi. The project will be done under a state government SPV on the lines of BDD chawls, where we roped in MHADA. Initial investments will be raised by the government," said Fadnavis.

In BDD Chawls, MHADA floated tenders for construction of homes for the existing residents of BDD chawls. The Chief Minister wants the same procedure ?o be followed here.

Dharavi is divided into five sectors, of which the fifth is being redeveloped by MHADA, and the government had floated tenders to redevelop the remaining four sectors. There has been a fight between existing residents with MHADA over the size of homes that should be allotted to them. MHADA came up with the idea that the size of tenements will be 405 square foot, but residents of a certain sector were demanding larger homes.
