Celebrity hairstylist Javed Habib will train 30,000 barbers in Maharashtra over the next three years and ensure that they either get a job or start their own salons.

The state government signed a memorandum of understanding with Habib on Friday. Principal secretary of the state skill development department Deepak Kapoor said, "Javed Habib has got 545 salons in Maharashtra. The training of these 30,000 barbers will start in the seven metros of the state — Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Aurangabad. Till date, 4,200 people have registered with the Habib Academy. Training of the first batch will start from September 5. It will be a three-month course."

Kapoor added that these barbers are already skilled, but in the Javed Habib Career Academy, they will be given advanced training and tips to maintain the salon. "Our emphasis is on the employment potential. Besides, to monitor the progress of the enrolled people, we have also set up a six-member joint working committee. It will be headed by the principal secretary of the skill development department of the state government," he said.

In the joint working committee, three members will be from the government, while the rest will be representatives of the Academy. The committee will have a meeting every two months. "It will take stock of the progress. Moreover, it will also resolve the problem faced by the enrolled people and the academy," Kapoor said.

Confirming the signing of the agreement with the state government, Habib said, "The first batch will start on September 5 in Mumbai. It is a really positive decision by the government. The remaining things, such as funding, will be discussed in the joint working committee."
