The Juhu-Versova stretch will have gaming zones, a mangrove boardwalk and WiFi hotspots
Mumbai’s beaches will soon cease to be mere stretches of sand, and will have gaming and recreation facilities for tourists. The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is launching a project to develop Juhu and Versova beach, one of the most famous beach stretches in Mumbai.
By the end of 2017, the MMB will create facilities for mangrove boardwalks, beach sports like football, cricket and volleyball, and introduce waste management systems on the northern part and southern part of Juhu and Versova beach respectively.
The project will also see watch towers, WiFi hotspots, beach shades, food stalls, bio-digester toilets and lifeguards being deployed. It will also include a gaming zone, and facilities for bathing and changing and put up signages with periodic details of the water quality, which the tourists can check before wading into the sea.
Jitendra Raisinghani, Deputy Director, Co-Ordination, Asian Development Bank project, told DNA that they were planning to develop and manage the two beaches to make them more attractive for tourists.
“We have divided it into five zones, and plan to undertake work on two zones comprising the northern part of the Juhu and Versova beach. They will have a gaming zone with facilities for cricket, volleyball, football, futsal (a variant of football). A boardwalk on the mangroves has also been sanctioned,” he said. Eventually, the entire Juhu-Versova stretch will be covered.
Like at the Bhogwe beach in Sindhudurg district, the MMB is also trying to rope in local restaurants to pitch in for hiring beach managers to manage the stretchand prevent anti-social elements from taking over. These establishments will gain from increased footfalls.
