Residents of Navi Mumbai have joined hands to save civic chief Tukaram Mundhe from the no-confidence motion called by the political parties of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC). Social media is flooded with messages to save the commissioner from being transferred.

For the last two days, residents have been circulating messages on WhatsApp and Facebook to prevent the no-confidence motion. It is the first time in 26 years (since its formation) of NMMC history that a no-confidence motion has been demanded against the civic chief by members of the standing committee.

Even RTI activist, Rajeev Mishra, on whose Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the Bombay high court had directed the MIDC, Cidco and NMMC to demolish 99 illegal structures at Digha in Navi Mumbai, has joined the campaign to save the civic chief.

For the last two days, social media has been trending to save NMMC chief Mundhe from no-confidence motion, called by 14 members of total 16 members. Only two members-one from BJP and another member, whose election in the committee is in dispute, did not sign the no-confidence motion. Mundhe was not available for comment on the development.

A special general body meeting has been called on October 25, where a no-confidence motion is likely to be introduced to oust Mundhe. He has been known to take action against corrupt officials and bring transparency in the functioning of NMMC.

Corrective measures of Mundhe did no go down well with political parties and those cutting across party lines, except BJP, have joined the bandwagon. However, residents of Navi Mumbai, who are happy since Mundhe has been given charge of civic chief around six months ago, have flooded messages in social media to save Mundhe.

However, some corporators are against their party's no-confidence motion decision as pressure mounts in their respective wards. There is a possibility that some corporators may not vote in favour of no-confidence motion.

The motion is likely to be passed by the House as majority of members are against the functioning of the civic chief. In case the House passes the no-confidence motion against the Mundhe, the state chief minister might have to recall the commissioner. However, state government can stay general body decisions by using section 451 of municipal corporation act.
