Criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the “sinful” Nanar refinery project, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday announced that Sena would not allow the project in Konkan “at any cost”.
He dared the BJP while addressing a public rally in Nanar, saying that Sena would destroy those who try to destroy the rich heritage of Konkan coastline.
Thackeray, along with Industries Minister, Subhash Desai; local MP Vinayak Raut; Minister Eknath Shinde, was addressing a public rally at Sagave Katradevi village in Nanar, Rajapur taluka, Ratnagiri. Desai announced withdrawing the notification for land acquisition for the project and said that it stands cancelled.
Thackeray had met Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with villagers from 17 villages around Nanar in 2017, to oppose the refinery project. After the notification for land acquisition for the project was issued by MIDC on May 18, 2017, villagers began opposing the project.
Indirectly laying the blame on PM Modi, Thackeray said, “This sin of Nanar refinery, which would destroy Konkan’s heritage, is by those who promised to bring Acche Din. I tell these people, if they destroy Konkan, Sena would destroy them.’ Challenging the PM and the BJP over the project, Thackeray said, “They always try to instill a sense of fear by saying that if projects are opposed, the investments go out of Maharashtra. I tell them, if at all you’re are so keen, please take this refinery project to Gujarat or Vidarbha. If you want, take Jaitapur nuclear plant also to Gujarat, be it Ahmedabad, Surat or Vadodara.”
Thackeray assured the people of Nanar and Konkan that Sena would stand by them provided they assure him of not selling an inch of land for the grid. He said people of Konkan should show that they would not sell their pride for money. Local MP Vinayak Raut criticised the Chief Minister by saying the latter is not bothered about Konkan’s interests, since he is busy in pleasing his bosses in Delhi.
