At a time when the number of commuters opting for half-yearly and yearly season passes on the Western Railway (WR) is on the decline, the railway authorities are grappling with the problem of commuters laminating fake high-amount train passes. On January 8, a ticker collector (TCs) caught one such commuter between Andheri and Bandra stations, who allegedly used a colour photocopy of the season ticket, pasted it onto a second-class season pass and laminated it.

"We have asked TCs to check these yearly and half-yearly passes minutely," said Mukul Jain, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), Western Railway.

The WR authorities are worried about such practices as the demand for yearly (YST) and half-yearly (HST) season passes are already dwindling as seen from April 2017 to December 2017. Sources said that the number of yearly tickets during the same period showed a drop of 63.15 per cent in the first-class compartment and 45.16 per cent in second-class compartment.

The half-yearly and yearly tickets' earnings has decreased by Rs 1.09 crore and Rs 4.39 crore respectively in the first class segment. Likewise in the second-class segment, there has been a drop by Rs 51.55 lakh and Rs 1.46 crore for half-yearly and yearly tickets respectively in in the same time frame.
