If parking problems in South Mumbai weren’t bad enough already, school and private buses are being illegally parked on its roads over the past few days. This has happened after the Traffic police banned plying of buses during peak hours from April.

Moreover, schools have also refused to provide parking lots. Some of the areas where these buses are parked are Fort, Tardeo, Mazgaon, and Byculla.

There are nearly 1,000-odd buses parked at many places on the roads across South and Central Mumbai. These buses block a majority of the road, thereby lessening the space for vehicular traffic. “Many private buses are forced to park on roads. These are the ones that ply for schools and private offices,” said Harsh Kotak, member, Mumbai Bus Malak Sangh.

Meanwhile, most schools have informed the school bus association and the state government that they do not have parking space inside their premises. Sources said that these buses are parked after people and school children are dropped off.

Apart from locations in parts of south Mumbai, these buses are also parked in Reay Road, Dockyard Road, and Wadala, where open spaces are available.

Taxi unions claim that this has also affected their parking lots in south Mumbai.
