Video footage of Amjad Khan, the alleged assailant of 60-year-old Right to Information (RTI) activist Bhupendra Vira, carrying a weapon near Vira's residence has proven to be a crucial piece of evidence in the case. It could be enough to corner Khan and his father Razzak. The CCTV footage is part of the 602-page charge sheet filed by the Mumbai Crime Branch in court on Thursday. The police also recorded statements of witnesses who had spotted the father and son threatening to kill Vira if he did not stop complaining to the civic body about the alleged illegal structures constructed by them.

In October 2016, Vira was found dead at his residence at Vakola's Razzak Chawl in Santacruz (East). Vira was locked in a property dispute with former corporator Razzak Khan and his son, police said.

"On the day of the incident, Amjad noticed his father was worried because of Vira. Razzak asked Amjad if he could make the problem go away by killing Vira. In a bid to calm his father's nerves, Amjad went to Vira's residence and shot him," said an officer. Vira's son Mayur suspected that Razzak Khan and his son were behind the incident, after which a case under sections 302 (murder), 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code, Indian Arms Act and Maharashtra Police Act was registered against the former corporator and his son.

"The CCTV footage shows Amjad with a gun tucked inside his pant at the crime scene. Also, the same gun was seized from Khan's residence. The ballistic report also confirmed that the bullet injury Vira sustained was fired from Amjad's weapon," said an officer. The police is also taking into consideration the verbal fight that broke out at Razzak Chawl between both parties. Inspector Pandarinath Wavhal of Crime Branch unit VIII, said, "Three people spotted Khan in the vicinity. The car from which Khan alighted was also featured in the footage," said Wavhal.
