The crime branch arrested one more suspect on Friday in connection with a Rs6.49 crore diamond heist, which had occurred two months ago in Borivali (east). After the incident, an official of the crime branch, unit 12, managed to arrest six people including prime suspect, Udaybhan Singh Thakur alias Doctor, 42, who was a driver with the security agency.

However, one suspect, Ajay Virendra Pratap Singh, 33, was absconding. But police arrested him from Virar on Sunday and recovered 15 diamonds from him, worth more than Rs50 lakh.

Thakur was working as a driver of a firm – SR Security Pvt Ltd – which transports cash, gold, diamonds and ornaments for private firms. "The incident took place on May 9, when Thakur was asked by his superiors to go the Borivali railway station to pick up four employees who were coming from Surat by the Gujarat Express, at around 3.30pm" said officer.

"The valuables, 3.5 kilograms of gold and 850 grams of diamonds were loaded in the high security vault of the van. The consignment belonged to Malca Amit JK Logistics Pvt Ltd and was being transported from the company's Surat office to their Mumbai office in BKC" said the officer.

"Thakur then stopped the vehicle near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, stating a problem in a tyre. Soon, four men came and attacked them. They gagged the guards inside the vehicle and drove to Virar, where Thakur and the men fled with the diamonds," added the officer.

A case of dacoity, robbery and kidnapping was registered at the Kasturba Marg police station in Borivali (east) on May 9, and crime branch officers started conducting a parallel inquiry.

Several teams were formed and the police managed to arrest Omprakash, Dhiraj Bipin and Rajesh, who attacked upon instruction from Thakur. Savitri, Thakur's sister in-law, hid the stolen booty in her house.

Around 80% of the stolen booty was recovered from the 6.
