The proposed Parel coaching complex will lead to re-girdering of Elphinstone Road-Lower Parel road over bridge (ROB), for which there is a possibility that the bridge could also be demolished.

This is the same bridge that connects Worli and Phoenix mall on one side and Currey Road on the other. In this year’s Railway budget, a provision of Rs 1 crore has been made for the same.

Sources said that as per plans, they are looking to re-girder the ROB that is between these two railway stations.

The Western Railway had got a provision of Rs. 1000 for this work, in last year’s budget, while the total project cost is Rs. 18.68 crore.

The re-girdering will involve changing of age-old girders that will need them to stop vehicular traffic. It is a way of strengthening the road over bridge, which is close to Lower Parel station.

Health of bridges is a major concern and so this year, the railways have provided Rs. 900 crore to both CR and WR together only for foot over bridges. Apart from this, the WR authorities have received Rs. 430 crore for ROBs. This huge monetary funding is mainly to ensure that bridges are strengthened, more staircases are provided for FOBs and adequate passenger amenities are given.

The officials said that with facilities like a terminus for local trains and coaching complex for long distance trains coming up at Parel, this bridge will serve its purpose as more vehicular traffic can be expected. DNA on February 7 reported about it in the article ‘Rs 193 crore to turn Parel station into a terminus’.

The Central Railway officials stated that they are working out a plan to have this Coaching complex on the land where there is a workshop underway. Moreover there is a possibility that once the coaching complex for long distance trains comes up, trains terminating at Dadar will be shifted. Work on Parel terminus is underway and is expected to be ready by December 2019.
