A six-year-old unattended boy was recently spotted by Radio Jockey Rani Jha — popularly known as RJ Rani — in a Mumbai local train. Instead of turning a blind eye, Rani took the boy to the police station and managed to trace his guardian in Kalyan.

However, the boy is currently in children's home and since his family is unable to take care of his studies, Rani has decided to sponsor the child's education.

On June 23, on her way home, Rani spotted an unattended boy in the ladies compartment of a local. Rani, who works with a leading FM station, had boarded the train at Andheri. The boy was barefoot, wore a black shirt and torn jeans. When Rani tried to talk to him, he could hardly keep his eyes open and kept talking irrelevantly, which concerned her. "As a mother, it is a natural instinct to be sensitive towards children," Rani said.

She asked the boy if he had run away from home and where he was going. He denied running away from home and said something about a "Bangali" following him and forcing him to beg. "This made me think about what kind of trouble the child was in and if he was being followed. I did what any responsible citizen should have done," she added.

She got down with the boy at Mumbai Central and headed to Tardeo police station. On being asked about his family, the boy revealed that his name was Lucky and he stayed with his grandmother in Kalyan.

Lucky was then taken to Dongri Rescue Home and was later shifted to Aasha Sadan section (for children aged six and below). "Initially, I did not tell the authorities of my media background, I wanted to see what is it like for a common man when it comes to dealing with the police. Police sub-inspector Avinash Shinde was very helpful in attending us," the RJ said.

Soon, the police managed to find Lucky's grandmother. "It was possible to track down Lucky's grandmother only because of the dedication and responsibility that the officer showed. He took the case very personally and was very sensitive towards Lucky."

Currently, the boy is being counselled at the rescue home. After counselling, he will get to where he finally want to live. "Irrespective of who gets his custody and where he studies, I have decided to sponsor his education," Jha said.
