Ridiculous to say National Anthem un-Islamic, say Muslims

"The statement actually shocked most Muslims. This is the logic of Wahabis and Salafis. It starts from that. No Muslim has ever attacked the National Anthem," said Feroze Mithiborewala, a member of Muslims for Secular Democracy.

Muslims in city ridiculed the decision of an Allahabad school to not play the National Anthem after some Muslim parents called it "un-Islamic". A news report had stated that the school had stopped the National Anthem, resulting in the principal and eight teachers resigning.

"The statement actually shocked most Muslims. This is the logic of Wahabis and Salafis. It starts from that. No Muslim has ever attacked the National Anthem," said Feroze Mithiborewala, a member of Muslims for Secular Democracy.

"It is quite ridiculous to make such a statement, that "Bharat Bhagya Vidhata" is objectionable from the Islamic point of view. We have been singing it for so many years in school and other functions. This fellow had gotten up and taken objection and made a nonsensical stand. Many years ago there was a sect in Christianity that had filed a case, which went up to the SC. It was a matter of conscience for them. If this school has a similar issue, it should spell it out and make its case in court. Instead of addressing the many problems the community is facing, they make such a ridiculous, objectionable and unfortunate statement," said Javed Anand, an activist who has taken up several cases of civil rights.

Several other Muslims had a similar view. "I did not understand the issue because Muslims have never had any problem with the National Anthem. They are trying to make an issue out of a non-issue," said Maulana Hakim Mehmood Dariyabadi.

Aslam Ghazi, in charge of the association for protection of civil rights in Jamaat E Islami, said, "There is nothing un-Islamic in the country. The Kerala HC and SC have said it is not compulsory. It should not unnecessarily be made into an issue. People are dying of hunger... why is this being discussed so much?"
