In Mumbai, the leases of 20 prominent gymkhanas were expired and not renewed for several years.
The Maharashtra Cabinet on Tuesday approved a policy for lease renewal of gymkhanas in Mumbai and its suburbs. According to the new policy, these gymkhanas will now have to pay 10 per cent of the ready reckoner rate of the total land value of the plot on which they stand, as against a paltry sum they were paying so far.
Also, there will be a 4 per cent rise in lease charges every year.
"The gymkhanas can pay the lease as per the old rate till December 31, 2016. From January 1, 2017, the new lease policy will be applicable. The lease will be renewed for 30 years," said a senior state minister.
In Mumbai, the leases of 20 prominent gymkhanas were expired and not renewed for several years. These include Parsi, Islam, Wilson College, Woodhouse, Hindu, and Catholic gymkhanas. As per the new policy, the gymkhanas will be allowed to rent out their premises for purposes other than sports for 45 days only.
"The 15 per cent of total area will be used for the commercial purpose only. The prior permission of state authority is mandatory for any sort of constructions to be carried out. The district collector will be the permanent member of the gymkhana committee. Besides, the gymkhana authorities cannot make it mandatory to use services of a particular caterer or decorator for any function," the policy note states.
To ensure transparency, gymkhanas will also have to start online booking facilities for letting out their premises for weddings and functions "We prepared the new lease renewal policy and on Tuesday it was approved in the cabinet meeting. It will help government to get more revenue in its kitty," said a minister who was part of the meeting.
