Two of the most sought-after celebrities of their times — Bollywood heartthrob Rekha and cricketer Sachin Tendulkar — have yet again showed a dismal performance in the Rajya Sabha (RS) as nominated MPs.

While Rekha showed up only for a day and that too for 10 minutes or so, Tendulkar attended the budget session only on four days. And barring the photo-ops for fans and journalists, their presence in the RS had hardly made any difference.

In fact, according to the attendance record maintained by the Rajya Sabha, their presence was no better during the earlier sessions of parliament either. Rekha recorded only four days' attendance from a total of 82 working days and Tendulkar was present only on occasions.

One of the most vocal critic of such absenteeism culture, RS member from Janata Dal (United) KC Tyagi, said this indicates utter contempt of such celebrities towards parliament.

"We have nominated members like HK Dua, KTS Tulsi, Dr Mungekar, Dr Ashok Ganguly, Anu Aga etc. also and I don't remember a day when they have missed out an important discussion and not given their suggestion on some important matter," he said.

In contrast, Rekha's counter star of the same era, Jaya Bachchan from Samajwadi Party and Bollywood lyricist Javed Akhtar not only have a far better record of attending Rajya Sabha, but they also have made their voice count by intervening on several raging issues, especially the documentary on the Nirbhaya case accused.

"It is high time that all parties should put an end to nominate celebrities who have no more value than useless showpieces. Parliament does not require such people," said Tyagi.

"I hope the BJP will take cognizance of this ridicule and nominate only those celebrities who can contribute something worthwhile to this august house," added Tyagi.
