Bachkana's custody was recently sought by the Mumbai police from a Karnataka prison on the grounds that he had plotted to kill film producer/director Mahesh Bhatt. Bachkana is also believed to be the brain behind the firing outside the residence of film producer Karim Morani, allegedly carried by a Pujari gang member.
According to sources in Mumbai crime branch, Bachkana has told the police that he was in touch with Pujari's arch rival Chhota Shakeel. Interestingly, Backhana once considered to be a close associate of gangster Chhota Rajan, has shifted loyalties and joined hands with Pujari.
"Bachkana is considered to be a close associate of Pujari and is believed to be the mastermind behind all the recent firings in the city," said a source from Mumbai crime branch. He said that despite working for Pujari, Bachkana was in touch with Shakeel. "For his daughter's marriage, he had borrowed money from Shakeel."
Crime branch sleuths believe that Bachkana was carrying out his underworld activities while he was lodged inside a Karnataka prison. "Bachkana had portrayed himself as the chief recruiter for the Pujari's gang. From inside the jail, he would recruit young members for the gang," said the source.
Additional commissioner of police (crime) K M M Prasanna said, "Bachkana was in touch with Chhota Shakeel and we are probing whether he has carried out any work for his gang."
