Rare trees from Mumbai may get heritage tag

A committee that has recently been formed, headed by Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) under Thane civic commissioner, Sanjeev Jaiswal, will be reviewing all the heritage structures and give them the heritage tag.

The committee will do a survey on the heritage structure along with the heritage trees in the city. Jaiswal, on a demand of the green activists, includes 100 old trees from the city to be surveyed and reviewed in order to tag them as heritage trees.

To identify the rare tree, that have been a witness to city's evolution, Punam Singhvi, president of NGO Hariyali, would be included in the panel.

The purpose to this, is to save trees in the city. "Trees being cut on a large scale due to development activities in the city have taken a toll on the green health of the city and at times the very old trees are targeted the most."

"Thane, which is home to many old trees, has near about 100 rare trees. So, we must make a point to retain the greenery in the city," she added.

"We also need to plant more traditional which have been reduced on a large scale," said one of the environmentalist.

TMC Deputy Commissioner Sandeep Malvi said, "The committee has been formed and they have also considered the opinion raised by the activists."
