A day after the railway apprentice strike brought the city to a standstill the rail passenger associations and experts are questioning the working of integrated security system (ISS) meant to strengthen the security at stations.

Former Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had innaugurated the service in 2015 at Dadar station.

The ISS was supposed to be shield against people who cause notoriety at railway stations. In June 2015, Dadar station along with five other railway stations of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), Kurla, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Kalyan and Thane got this elaborate security system at a total cost of Rs 21.72 crore.

The system was meant to monitor passenger activities through a network of CCTV cameras. In fact at Dadar itself there are 118 CCTVs installed as part of ISS that would beam live images. These are monitored by six 42 inches screens. This system has been setup on platform 6 of Dadar station on CR.

“It seems that the ISS is a failure. Despite such a huge group being gathered at and outside Dadar station, the CR authorities could do little about it,” said Subhash Gupta, president, Mumbai Rail Yatri Parishad. These CCTVs are supposed to not only monitor the station but also it’s periphery. Moreover it has features to identify people in groups, scrutinize facial expressions and other features.

“The railways have habit of inaugurating things with much fanfare. But they do little about running the system properly. If ISS has the features of facial recognition and monitoring movement of groups then what were the officials doing when such a huge group assembled,” said Madhu Kotian, president, Mumbai Rail Pravasi Sangh.
