Several students from the graduated batch of LS Raheja College of Arts and Science in Santa Cruz are fuming over what they call as discrimination by the college authorities for not inviting them for the certificate distribution ceremony.

The college had organised its annual convocation ceremony on Saturday but had invited only 150 of the 500 plus students who scored A and O grades in their final exams at various undergraduate degree courses. Students who got grades lower than A were not invited for the ceremony and asked to collect their degrees from the office counter which disappointed a lot of students.

Students across various streams like BA, Bcom, BMM etc said that the college discriminated by not calling them for the ceremony despite passing the third year exam. "The college has taken a very biased stand towards those who have scored A and O grade. Convocation and degree distribution cannot be held only for the top few students but should be held for all students who have passed," said a BMM student on the condition of anonymity.

On the day of convocation, several students on reaching the college were informed by the authorities that they were not invited as there was not much space. The college sent out letters to students securing the two top grades in the month of February. For other students, a notice was put up on March 4 in the college asking them to collect their degrees from the office counter. While some students collected their certificate without any objection, several others are now denying to do so citing the college's differential treatment.

Dr Debojit Sarkar, Principal, LS Raheja College said, "We would have invited all students but since there was a space constraint, we invited only those who secured A and O grades. Other students, however, can collect their degrees anytime from the college office."
