In a shocking incident, a 48-year-old man lost his life after his colleague inserted a high pressure air pump, used to clean cars, in his rectum at Cotton Green on Tuesday. Kalachowkie police have registered a case of murder and arrested the colleague, identified as Santosh Arekar (42).

According to police, both the deceased — identified as Yakub Shaikh — and the accused worked for Toyota car showroom. On Tuesday, when Shaikh and Arekar were working in the showroom, the latter thought of playing a prank. He took the high pressure air pipe and inserted in the deceased's rectum and switched on the machine.

"Arekar and Shaikh were friends and would often indulge in friendly banters. However, Tuesday's prank went horribly wrong as Shaikh's body got swollen and he started vomiting. It was only then that Arekar realised things have become serious, said Dilip Ugale, senior police inspector from Kalachowkie police station.

Arekar and other employees immediately switched off the machine and rushed Shaikh to KEM hospital where he was declared brought dead. "We were informed by the hospital authorities about the incident after which we went to the spot and registered a case of murder against Arekar and immediately arrested him," said Ugale.

He added: "We have got three eyewitnesses who witnessed the entire incident and narrated the sequence of events."

Dr Harish Pathak, head of the forensic science department in KEM hospital, said he was witnessing such a case for the first time. "Within 4-5 seconds of that pipe being inserted in the rectum, the body of the deceased had swollen up. According to our information, the air pressure in the pipe was 130 to 140 PSI (pound per square inch)."

He said that Shaikh immediately started vomiting and collapsed after which he was brought to the hospital immediately. "The incident happened around 2.30 pm. He was brought to the hospital at 2.55 pm and immediately declared dead. During post-mortem, as soon as the knife was used, air came out of the body like a punctured balloon. Air had entered his lungs and abdomen. He died of pulmonary air embolism- trauma to the lungs because of blockage in a blood vessel in the lungs due to air," said Pathak.
