The residents of Indira Nagar in Andheri West woke up to a shocking incident in which a 33-year-old hawker committed suicide after allegedly killing his mother and grandmother due to poverty.

According to the police, Samir Baraskar Khan allegedly killed Minatai Khan, 55, and his grandmother Fatima Shaikh, 75, and he later hanged himself from the ceiling fan at their residence in Transit camp. Khan was found by a three-year-old girl while playing in the building corridor entered the residence on Wednesday.

"The family often fought over petty issues but we never imagined that Sameer would take such an extreme step," said Seeta Bharti, a neighbour.

The police team, on reaching the residence first found the body of the man hanging on the ceiling, and later found two bodies of elderly women on the cot of the room.

"The elderly woman often fell ill, and Sameer being the only earning family member was not able to provide for the needs of the family including medication," said a police officer, DN Nagar police station.

Arun Chavan, Assistant Police Inspector, DN Nagar, said, "We have sent the body for post mortem and prima facie it is a clear case of double murder and suicide. We have also learnt that the family was facing financial issues.We have registered a case of accidental in this regard and are investigating further", said Chavan adding, "We will register a case of murder against Sameer Khan. We have conducted the post mortem and are awaiting the reports."
