After the resident doctors called off their strike on Friday night, security was beefed up across the Mumbai-based civic hospitals.

At Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, which is known as Sion hospital, where a lady doctor was manhandled during the strike period, police officials manned the gates. The entry inside various civic-run hospital premises has been restricted to one gate and another is being used for exit. While the government has assured increased security by April 5, the hospitals have changed the security system with the current security personnel.

Relatives and vehicles are being allowed to enter after basic questioning. Arun Jaiswani, a resident doctor at Sion Hospital, said, “While security has been beefed up at the entrance gates, the management has formed a teams of five security personnel to take care of the causality and emergency wards. Earlier, only one person was responsible. The teams work in three shifts.”

One first-year resident doctor at the KEM hospital said, “There has been an improvement in the security management. They are asking questions to everybody before entering the hospital building. While there is a lot more improvement needed, we are happy to see the basic steps taken by the hospital for the safety.”

Three days after the strike, many patients queued outside the OPD wards in the civic run hospitals for the treatment.

Pass system has been implemented and only one relative is being allowed inside with a patient who has been admitted. Asalfa resident Pratiksha Kumtekar, whose father-in-law is admitted at the Sion hospital, said, “For the past 15 days my bag was never checked but now they have started checking. My father-in-law has a head injury and during the strike his health was neglected. He is now back in the ICU. With the strike being called off, he is being attended to,” she said.

Dr Avinash Supe, Dean of KEM Hospital, said, “Available security and police are maintaining the security. We have also given the order and we have been assured that by April 5, we will be provided by more security personnel. While CCTV system is already installed, alarm system will be functioning soon. The number of patients have increase but it will get stabilized by this week.”

Dr Parthiv Sanghvi, state secretary, IMA said, “Security has improved at most places from the feedback that I received. We also want the fast-tracking of cases related to attack on the doctors.”
