An image of polluted dirty water entering the sea along the picturesque Marine drive went viral on Saturday after it was shared on twitter and other social media platforms, meanwhile officials from Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that they would have to investigate it.

The image showing dark and muddy coloured water entering the sea was shared on twitter by Gautam Vaishnav, who informed that the picture was shot by his friend from the Trident Hotel. Infact, when he tagged Mumbai Police and even Chief Minister's office, it was Mumbai Police twitter handle that replied stating that it had informed the BMC's disaster cell and even stated that the complaint number was 8532.

When contacted the BMC's disaster cell they informed that they had already forwarded the message to the A ward. "Prima facie it looks that there is an outlet of sewage, and the floating material might be oil substance," said an official.

Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of A ward said that they have not received any formal complaint. "We have asked the officials from the solid waste management to investigate it," said Dighavkar. However, he even added that it seems like it might be sewage water.

Environmentalist claimed that the image was clear enough to indicate how untreated sewage was destroying the marine ecosystem.

Mumbai produces 2,200 to 2,400 million litres of sewage per day (MLD) of which BMC treats 1,500 MLD at Bhandup, Ghatkopar, Versova, Malad, Colaba, Worli and Bandra sewage treatment plants (STPs). The remaining 700-900 MLD is treated at private STPS by hotels and housing complexes, while the rest is directly released into the creeks, lakes and sea.
