The six jail staffers arrested for the alleged killing of Manjula Shetye, a murder convict lodged inside Byculla prison, have revealed to the Mumbai crime branch that Shetye was assaulted for insulting the jailer in front of the inmates. Police have also seized the 'dupatta' which was used to drag Shetye and the baton which was used to assault her.

Manisha Pokharkar, a grade 2 jailor and five jail staffers Bindu Naikwade, Waseema Shaikh, Sheetal Shegaonkar, Surekha Kakkad and Arti Shingane were arrested on Saturday and have been remanded to police custody up to July 7 by the Esplanade court. The Mumbai crime branch during preliminary interrogations has learned that Shetye was punched and kicked by the jail staffers on the orders of Pokharkar, leading to injuries to her lungs.

"The jail staffers revealed that Shetye was instigating the other inmates against the jail staff and on the day of the incident had insulted Pokharkar in front of the other female inmates," said a senior crime branch officer.

"They have also revealed that after the assault she was sent back inside the barrack, where she vomitted inside the loo and collapsed. Pokharkar claimed that it was not her intention to kill Shetye," said the officer.

"Moreover we are also awaiting the forensic reports from the laboratory and are checking the CCTV camera footage of the passage inside the prison," said the officer.

Meanwhile, the prison authorities revealed that Shetye had not informed them about the assault after she was sent inside the barrack. "We have instructed the prison staff to not assault any inmates if they fail to follow orders. We have also assured female inmates inside the prison that they will not be treated in an ill manner but they should follow the prison rules," said the officer.
