A day after a 34-year-old woman fell off her bike and was run over by a truck on Jawhar-Dahanu road, the Kasa police arrested the truck driver Vijay Yadav, 35, for causing death due to negligence.

On Sunday, Jagruti Hogale, a resident of Kher Nagar in Bandra East left for a bike ride to Jawhar, bout 120 km from Mumbai. Near a village, Vaiti, she fell off her bike while didging a pothole and came under the wheels of a truck.

"We've arrested the driver and seized the truck. The road where the accident occurred has potholes and the woman was trying to dodge them when she came under the wheels of the truck," said Jayprakash Guthe, Assistant Police Inspector, Kasa police station.

Yadav has been booked under sections 304 (A) (causing death due to negligence) and 279 (rash driving) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Motor vehicles Act.

However, Hogale's family and friends blamed negligent road authorities for her death. "She was the senior member of the women's biker group Bikerani, and was a very safe driver. Due to heavy rains she could not see the pothole when she lost control and fell. The truck driver is innocent. Instead action should be taken against the authorities responsible for maintaining the road in that village," a family member said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Public Works Department Minister Chandrakant Patil has sought a report on the incident.

Patil said, "Not all roads belong to the PWD. Some roads are under the jurisdiction of the concerned local bodies like municipal corporation. Report from the department would make it clear as to what was the issue in this case. Due to heavy rains in areas like Mumbai, Nashik, Konkan region, potholes have surfaced and it is not possible to repair the roads during monsoon."
