Be passionate about engineering, be curious, don't let money be your only goal when opting for engineering, plan ahead, learn to communicate effectively, be confident, let your kids make their own decisions, every engineering stream has potential — these were some of the insights offered to the 50-odd students and even more parents who attended 'Engineering the Future', a seminar organised by ZEE Business and Rao IIT at the DG Khetan International School at Malad on Saturday.

The first speaker at the three-hour seminar, Chetan Tolia, chief HR officer, Tata Power, listed curiosity as the top quality students need to become engineers, followed by hard work, detailing and practicality.

"Choose a college where professors actually teach and students actually attend," he suggested. "Don't let money be your only goal. There is no use of an engineer who is not going to work for society."

Principal, Birla College of Arts, Science and Commerce Naresh Chandra then spoke about the importance of planning one's career and getting into a good college, the need for parents to give their children freedom and support, the necessity for students who take up engineering to focus now, so that they can enjoy later, and the existence of newer engineering streams.

Founder and CEO of Rao IIT Vinay Kumar went on to highlight the need for "high aspirations" in a competitive admission process where "only competence counts".

Dr Vijay Khole, Vice Chancellor of Amity University covered several aspects from the pressure that children are under and the cons of selecting the wrong career to the need for aptitude tests and the availability of global opportunities in engineering.
