After all its unsuccessful efforts of speeding up the assessment process, the University of Mumbai has now roped in Nagpur University teachers for the task. As the July 31 deadline for declaring the results as set by the Governor nears, the university has now requested the Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) to help them in assessing around 1.5-2 lakh answer sheets of the commerce faculty.

Over 250 teachers at Nagpur university have recently been given letters notifying them about the task of evaluating papers for the University of Mumbai. "MU's Vice Chancellor, Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, requested us to help them in the task of assessment. Over 250-300 teachers at our university can evaluate close to 2 lakh papers in ten days," said Dr Siddharthavinayaka Kane, VC, RTMNU.

A team from MU is supposed to reach Nagpur on Friday evening after which papers will be transferred online. Kane added that considering that the results of their university have already been declared, teachers will be able to evaluate MU papers. "Our university follows a mixed method of evaluation. While subjects which have less than 500 students are evaluated offline, the remaining ones are evaluated on-screen."

A university official said that despite several measures like having additional teachers, sending letters to teachers, etc there is not much improvement in the rate at which papers are assessed.

"Teachers are currently assessing papers only for a few hours after college as a result of which some of them are not able to meet the target of assessing 30 papers a day. Besides, the technical glitches also continue to exist," said the official.

Opposing voices

Student unions have said that transferring the papers to Nagpur University is not a good idea and demanded the VC to take responsibility for the delay. "The university VC is responsible for all the chaos. He should resign," said Pradip Sawant of the Yuva Sena.
