A Panvel based, 56-year-old woman's heart saved the life of a 21-year-old college student suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy at Mulund’s Fortis Hospital. The heart transplant took place on Tuesday evening.

By donating heart, kidneys and liver of the 56-year-old woman, her family members saved three lives, marking the 11th cadaveric donation of the city.

The 56-year-old female patient from Panvel was declared brain dead at MGM Hospital in Vashi as she suffered a brain hemorrhage after she collapsed on the road. The recipient at Fortis Hospital was on Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) support which provided cardiac and respiratory support. He was put on a super emergency waitlist as his condition became critical a week ago.

Dr Anvay Mulay, Head of Cardiac Transplant Team, Fortis Hospital, said, “The patient was in a critical state and a heart transplant was essential to save his life. With the availability of donor heart, the entire transfer and transplant mechanism reacted swiftly. The surgery was successful and the recipient is now stable. He is now recovering in the ICU and under constant observation for the next 48 to 72 hours.”

The heart was transported through a green corridor by covering a distance of 20 km in 23 minutes between Vashi’s MGM Hospital and Mulund’s Fortis Hospital.

According to ZTCC officials, while one of the kidneys was donated to a patient in Lilavati Hospital and another was given to INHS Asvini Hospital. The liver was not medically fit for donation.

Speaking about the increase in number of organ donation, Dr Mulay said, “There has been a slow but steady growth to the cause of organ donation. This is a good sign as many lives can now be saved with the available organs. It is an absolute honor to be a part of a team which has been working for the cause of organ donation in the state.”
