The Legal Metrology Organisation (LMO) officials have written to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) asking them why Packaged Commodity Rules are being flouted at the Wankhede Stadium and what measures are they taking to ensure spectators are not fleeced.

The move came after a surprise inspection by the LMO officials at the Wankhede Stadium revealed that eatables were being sold for more than the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). The LMO have also registered three cases in this regard against the vendors as per Legal Metrology Act.

According to Controller of LMO and Additional Director General of Police, Amitabh Gupta, a surprise inspection was conducted at Wankhede Stadium on May 16. "During the inspection, we observed that vendors at Garware Pavilion, Gawaskar Stand and Vijay Merchant Stand were selling ice-creams for a price higher than the printed price. This was clearly a case of overcharging," Gupta said.

"BCCI and MCA have been asked to explain why this is happening and what steps they are taking to put an end to this. They had earlier assured LMO that they would be appointing a Compliance Officer to look into this. Hence, we have requested them to give a detailed account of action they have taken so far," said Gupta.

Last year in December, an inspection was done by LMO officials who had found that M/s Wheels and More, a stall operating in the stadium, was charging Rs 50/- for a bottle of water that was priced at only Rs 20.

The LMO has appealed all consumers who visit various stadiums in the state to report if they notice any such violation. "If consumers come across any issues with regards to Legal Metrology Rules violations, they can approach LMO, and we will take suitable action after due verification," he added.
