Over 300 scientists, researchers, professors and students from the city were a part of the 'March for Science' on Wednesday. The silent rally, which started at the August Kranti Maidan ended near Girgaum Chaupatty.

The rally was organised to put a stop to the propagation of "unscientific", "obscurantist" ideas and increase the funding for science and promote scientific research. Scientists expressed concerns over the proliferation of "pseudo-science" in the country and stressed on the importance of scientific research.

"Programmes like SVAROP (Scientific Validation And Research On Panchgavya) are being funded by the government at a time when the funding for real scientific research is slashed. We wanted to speak out against this regressiveness that is encouraged in today's day and age and thus decided to come together as a community that believes in scientific ideas and research," said Mugdha Karnik, Director at the Centre for Extra Mural Studies and one of the organisers of the rally.

Professors and students from several educational institutes like The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) attended the march along with activists from various NGOs. "At a time when real scientific research is not encouraged and some unscientific projects are being propagated, we felt that it was time to take to the streets," said Tejal Kanitkar, Assistant Professor at TISS Mumbai.

The March was organised on the lines of a similar series of protests in the USA in April this year protesting budgetary cuts for science in the regime of Donald Trump.
