The traffic police has come up with a solution to reduce the number of parked vehicles on city roads. Called 'Marking for Parking', this initiative consists of new sign boards at parking zones, which would mention the number of vehicles that are permitted to be parked on the particular stretch. Moreover, the number of permissible parked vehicles will be painted on the road as well. If the number of parked vehicles exceeds this number, the owners of the excess vehicles will be subject to action.

This development was confirmed by Additional Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Vitthal Jadhav.

The traffic department is also in talks with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and have briefed them about this initiative. “In the next few days, the initiative would begin. We have also asked the BMC to increase the parking spaces in the city,” Jadhav said.

The traffic police is also planning other initiatives. First, the traffic branch is in the process of classifying roads into congested and non-congested ones. The move, said traffic cops, would help the traffic police to deploy more manpower at sites of greater traffic congestion, and reduce the manpower at relatively less congested sites.

“The Traffic branch has come out with the concept of classification of roads in A, B, C and D categories. The A category will consist of heavily traffic-affected roads, while the D category will have least traffic issues. This way we would be able to direct more manpower to the traffic-affected roads and streets and clear them,” said Jadhav.

A traffic police officer said, “We have 25 traffic divisions across the city. We have realised that some traffic divisions have massive jurisdictions. In order to lessen the burden of these traffic divisions, the traffic branch will soon increase the number of its divisions from 25 to 34. We are also in the process of setting up traffic beat chowkies, consisting of an officer and three policemen, in each of the divisions. We are in communication with the BMC to provide spaces for these chowkies,” said a traffic police officer.

The new traffic divisions would be at Azad Maidan, Malabar Hill, Dadar, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Mankhurd, Kurla, Santacruz, MIDC and Dahisar. “We have already sanctioned the staff and wireless sets for these new divisions. We expect to bring about some positive changes in the future, as far as the Traffic branch is concerned,” the officer said.
