City crime branch sleuths have busted yet another racket wherein jobs were provided to illegitimate candidates in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with the connivance of BMC officials after candidates were shown as relatives of deceased BMC workers. Two people have been arrested by the police in the job racket case in the S-ward. Earlier, similar frauds had come to light in D-ward and G-South ward of the BMC.

The arrested duo has been identified as Mukesh Katriya alias Ramesh Aalji Gohil (35) and Samant Gohil (59). The police have recovered a BMC identity card from Ramesh and Mukesh, Mukesh's Aadhar Card, two mobile phones and cash.

According to the police, following the job racket cases in D-ward and G-South ward, the crime branch probed if similar frauds had taken place at other BMC wards in the city and had sought details from S-ward at Bhandup, N-ward at Ghatkopar and T-ward at Mulund about candidates who had secured jobs on compassionate grounds in the solid waste management (SWM) department.

The police then called in the candidates for questioning and started verifying their documents. "The probe revealed that in May 2011, a job was given to one Ramesh on compassionate grounds after his father Aalji Gohil's death in the SWM department. He had no documents to establish his identity and relationship with his father and the documents that he had submitted to the BMC office for seeking the job were damaged in a fire that had taken place at his residence five years ago," said a crime branch officer.

He added that a further probe revealed that while the death certificate of Aalji Gohil submitted to the S-ward office was genuine, the birth certificate provided by Ramesh to the S-ward was actually registered in a girl's name. "This clearly revealed that Ramesh had submitted a bogus birth certificate to seek the job. Further probe revealed that the real name of the candidate was Mukesh Katriya and he was actually a distant relative of the deceased BMC worker Aalji Gohil. Mukesh had connived with his relative Samant Gohil to seek the job on the basis of bogus documents," the officer said.

A case was then registered at Bhandup police station against Mukesh and Samant under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code for cheating and forgery.

The police have now launched a probe to find out who helped Mukesh prepare the bogus documents and whether he had prepared more such bogus documents and whether any civic officials were involved in the crime.
