Panvel-Karanjade gaon bus service of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) has become hit among commuters as over 5,000 passengers travelled in first six days of its operation. The service, which was a long pending demand of residents, was started in April.

According to NMMT officials from Asudgaon depot, the service route number 76 is getting good response from commuters and everyday over 2000 passengers are travelling.

The service was a long-pending demand of Panvel residents and the commuter welfare organisation, Citizens Unity Forum (CUF), followed up with the NMMT for a long time.

From day one, the service started churning out revenue and day one it made Rs1700 while in six days, total revenue generated was over Rs36,000. An official from Asudgaon depot informed that the service is getting popularity among commuters and days to come, more passengers will use.

Meanwhile, residents have demanded to increase frequency of the service. At present, bus from both end is available at 20 minutes frequency. The first service from Panvel railway station is at 6.42am, while the last is at 8.40pm.

Similarly, from Karanjade, the first service will leave at 7am and last service at 9pm with 20 minutes frequency from each side. The 4.1km distance will be covered in 18 minutes and the frequency will also be same, 18 minutes.

This is the second service after NMMT's Panvel bus service last November. "The NMMT is willing to start more services in Panvel, but lack of manpower poses hurdle," said a senior member, CUF. He added that the authority accepted their demand to start the service.

Initially, NMMT started a ring route in Panvel between Panvel station and Sai Nagar, which received an overwhelming response from commuters.

NMMT services in Panvel were started with the initiative of CUF, who had been opposing arbitrary charging of fares by autorickshaws in the city and lamented lack of initiative taken by the Panvel civic body to start the city bus service.
