Indicating its eagerness for a patch up with the Shiv Sena, senior BJP leader and state revenue minister Chandrakantdada Patil lashed out at NCP leader and former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar for his comments against its estranged ally.

Speaking at the BJP's foundation day rally at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) on Friday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis too paid his tribute to the late Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray for his commitment to Hindutva. The BJP has already deputed finance and forests minister Sudhir Mungantiwar to negotiate a pre-poll understanding with the Shiv Sena, which has announced it will contest all future elections sans an alliance.

Speaking at a party protest rally, Pawar had referred to the Shiv Sena's policy of being in power but acting out the role of the opposition and called it a "double-faced earthworm." The Shiv Sena had returned fire through an editorial in party organ Saamna.

Speaking on Friday, Patil attacked Pawar for his comments. "The Shiv Sena is not an earthworm, but you (NCP) are termites who have infested the country," he charged.

Patil said Pawar's attempts to provoke the Shiv Sena would have no use as they would stay put in the government. The senior BJP leader said like ex-Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Maharashtra deputy chief minister and senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal, NCP leaders too would find themselves in jail. "A couple of jail cells around that housing Bhujbal are vacant," he threatened.

He referred to the NCP's ongoing state-wide "Hallabol Yatra" as a "gallabharu yatra" (one that is intended at filling coffers).

Speaking later, Fadnavis paid his respects to "Hindu hriday samrat Balasaheb Thackeray" for his commitment to Hindutva and "Maharashtra Dharma" with the BJP. His comments were greeted with cheers from the crowd.

Patil said the BJP-led government would ensure justice for the dominant Maratha community and construct an equestrian statue of warrior-king Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in the Arabian sea at Mumbai.
