Sleuths from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) recently arrested a four-member gang, including a woman, for allegedly ferrying a huge consignment of 36kg hashish from Jammu to Maharashtra. Officers learnt that the traffickers had used a woman and a child as their shield to avoid suspicion.

Sources in the bureau said they had received information that a syndicate in Bhiwandi is procuring hashish in large quantities from Jammu & Kashmir and is involved in trafficking in Maharashtra and Goa. The said consignment was headed by one Raju Kawade alias Raja.

"Drug traffickers use different modus operandi to procure hashish every time. It has been found that sometimes they carry contraband in their vehicles and sometimes use the rail route. However, this time they played it real smart and roped in a woman and a child. A few days ago, NCB officers laid a trap near Charoti, which is close to Palghar district, and nabbed the traffickers. They had managed to sneak in the contraband from Jammu. Having a woman and child helped them cross several state borders easily," said an NCB officer, requesting anonymity.

He added that 36kg of hashish concealed in the cavity of the vehicle was recovered. Further probe revealed that the consignment was sourced from Himachal Pradesh.

"We have been making all possible efforts to curb the menace of drug trafficking. We work out information for months and nab those involved. Apart from this, people too need to be sensitised about the menace of narcotics," said NCB Mumbai zonal director (West region) Sanjay Jha.
