Three nature lovers have come together to save trees and beautify tree beds on the Linking Road stretch in Santacruz. In an initiative which launched four days ago, Aditi Kane, Preena Jaiswal and Shirley Gomes identified six tree beds on the footpaths in the area that were in poor condition and beautified them by planting saplings in them.

“This is a pilot project to beautify the tree beds and plant more trees in the area. With the help of BMC’s H West ward officials we cleared the debris dumped inside the tree beds as it could be killing the trees by choking their roots, and asked the gardens department to send soil to form a fertile layer in each tree bed. We bought dozens of plants to plant inside the tree beds. Shashank Rane and Asmita Rane who have a nursery in the locality helped us to identify which trees can be planted and imparted technical knowledge about tree plantation,” said Kane.

“For the six tree beds which we beautified, we have requested the nearby residential society members and shop owners to maintain and water the tree beds daily. We have got a good response from them,” Jaiswal said.

The group has planted, Zebrina Pendula, Green Syngonium, Spider, Golden Duranta, Money plant, Lucky Bamboo, Green Alter, Red Alter and Variegated Alter, among others. They have now identified another 12 tree beds on Linking Road which are in shabby condition, and will be working on beautifying them next week.

“After a post on social media, many people have come forward and showed interest in beautifying the tree beds outside their society.” So far, the funds for the project are managed by the trio alone,” added Jaiswal.

The group will write letters to residential societies in the locality about the initiative. “The primary challenge is to water the plants regularly and trim them once in two weeks. People usually use the tree beds to dump garbage and debris, so the residents adopting the tree beds will have to look after the maintenance,” added Kane. “We will be guiding the members adopting the tree beds,” Jaiswal added.
