Failure of the Nalasopara police to initiate prompt action in the case of four puppies being burnt to death has pushed residents of the Vasai society, where it happened, to take matters into their own hands. They have declared a reward of Rs 25,000 for whoever identifies the culprit/s.

The complainant in the case, Ganesh Rane, also brought to attention the fact that earlier five puppies were poisoned to death in the same society.

dna had highlighted in its Friday edition how four puppies had been charred to death in the Krishna Sagar Housing Society by unknown miscreants.

Rane said, "In the earlier incident, five puppies were poisoned. We had complained to the police about it, but till now no action has been taken. Hence, along with the animal activists' group, we have declared the reward."

"We suspect a society resident is behind the act and have started seeking help from the locals. But the police are yet to even start preliminary investigations," added Rane.

"Members of our animal activists' group will visit the area and circulate pamphlets and will also try and zero in on the culprit/s. We also plan to create awareness in the area about stray dogs," said Salim Charania of Peace for Animal Welfare Association.
