There is no toll relief for you, not just yet. The state government has decided to extend the deadline set for its committee, formed to study and find out feasibility of shutting down five toll nakas, by three months. The committee, set up under additional chief secretary Anand Kulkarni, is said to have submitted a “half-baked” report. The earlier deadline ended on Tuesday.

The nakas in question are Vashi, Dahisar, Mulund, Airoli and LBS. As per the agreement, contractors had been permitted to collect toll at these five entry points till November 19, 2026.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis told the committee that its report is incomplete, with a lot of loopholes, and, hence, needs work. “The CM said we should not be in a hurry while deciding on toll and finance. So, the committee has been given three more months to submit a concrete and feasible solution,” said Chandrakant Patil, PWD minister.
Patil said if they decide to shut down the toll nakas, there will be a burden of Rs2,000 crore on the state exchequer. “An option is to give exemptions to private cars and continue to levy toll on commercial heavy vehicles. But 70% vehicles passing through these five nakas are non-commercial. We will have to either compensate the contractors or buy back the projects. However, we are working on various options to give relief to Mumbaikars and those residing on the periphery,” he added.

Earlier, the state government had closed down 12 toll nakas and exempted smaller vehicles and state transport buses from paying toll at 53 gates from June 1.
Patil said the government is also working on making the Mumbai-Goa travel toll-free. “However, most of the nakas on this route come under the purview of the central government. Central road and transport minister Nitin Gadkari is quite positive about abolishing toll on this stretch. We are also pursuing at our level. Let's see how it works out,” the minister added.

The BJP came to power at the Centre and in state on the popular slogan of 'toll-free Maharashtra'.
Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar had criticised the BJP government for this decision. “This is being planned to gain publicity, but it will have serious repercussions on the state's economy. To develop infrastructure and improve transport, private investors put in money and recover it through toll. By scrapping toll, how will the government repair roads across the state?” Pawar had asked.
