Mumbai University launches zoology textbook designed with help of students and domain experts

A first-of-its-kind zoology textbook, which has been drafted with the help of students and over 127 professors, was launched by Mumbai University's press on Monday. The book was unveiled by Ravindra Waikar, the Minister of State for Higher and Technical Education at Phirozshah Mehta Auditorium in the Kalina campus of the University, in the presence of Dr Rajan Welukar, Vice Chancellor.

At the event, Waikar praised this unique step taken by the University, saying, "The University of Mumbai has taken a major initiative to make available study materials for students," He also wished that Universities would take such initiatives for the benefit of students.

The Chairman of Board of Studies of Zoology, Professor Vinayak Dalvie said, "The initiative is the first of its kind, as the textbook has been prepared solely by subject experts based on their research and study and their understanding of the requirement of the syllabus."

Explaining the purpose of the textbook, Welukar said, "The textbook is an attempt to standardize the syllabus across all the colleges affiliated with the University of Mumbai. Special attention has been given to the ecology prevalent in and around the colleges in these regions, so that students are able to get practical learning experience."

This zoology textbook for first-year BSc students has been designed based on the topic preferences of students and expert inputs from faculty who are in constant touch with the industry requirement, the University says.
