Lashing out at the Shiv Sena for maladministration and corruption in the BMC, MNS chief Raj Thackeray said the BJP had no right to criticise its estranged ally on these counts as the two had shared power in the country's richest civic body for years.

He also accused his cousin and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray of trying to usurp the Mayor's bungalow at Dadar under the guise of using it for the memorial of late Sena supremo Bal Thackeray.

"How can the BJP say that the Shiv Sena is involved in corruption? They did it, but you were in power for five years. Haven't your hands been tainted as well?" Raj questioned.

"The Shiv Sena is using Balasaheb's photo to make promises to voters... Do not conceal your misadministration and corruption in the name of Balasaheb," charged Raj, questioning the Shiv Sena over how the BMC's funds meant for developmental activities were utilised.

He alleged that his estranged cousin Uddhav, who went to the Mayor's bungalow daily, was using the memorial of the late Sena chief as a pretext to usurp the structure. The state government has allocated the sea-facing bungalow located at Dadar for the memorial of Thackeray Senior who passed away in 2012.

"They are making promises now, first reveal what you have done for the past five years," challenged Raj, pointing out that the Sena was in its fifth term in the BMC. He claimed that in contrast, the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), which is controlled by the MNS, had progressed in the five years that the party was at the helm.

Raj alleged that the BMC's spending on social infrastructure like health and education had not led to visible improvements on the ground and while the civic body had distributed tabs to children in its schools, these had stopped functioning soon after. He said that corruption had taken place in this.

"All open spaces (in Mumbai) have been taken over by corporators and (Shiv Sena and BJP) men for building clubs. This is a way of earning money... These open spaces belong to you and they will construct clubs on them," Raj told his cadre.

Raj attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the demonetisation of high-value currency notes. He said that while the BJP had promised to provide Rs 10,000 crore for Mumbai's development once elected to power, there had been no progress on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's promise to grant a Rs 6,500 crore development package to Kalyan- Dombivali.

Raj also questioned the source of the BJP's funds and charged that it was using money power to get defectors from other parties since it could not get candidates of its own.
