Come 2022 and Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ metro line, that is under implementation, will be driverless. There will not be a need to have train captains to ply the metro trains along the 32.5-km route as such trains can be operated from a remote location like a control room.

"During the first year of operations there will be pilots controlling train systems, but from the subsequent year it will be operated remotely by having driverless metro trains," said AA Bhatt, Director (Systems), Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC).

As per the implementation schedule of MMRC, the stretch between SEEPZ and Bandra Kurla Complex will be opened for public operations from September 2020. Whereas, the entire underground metro line will be commissioned only in March 2021.

The metro trains will be equipped with advanced signaling system — Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) — that helps in having driverless metro operations.

Even the trains with Mumbai Metro One Private Limited, being run between Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar, can be operated without having any train pilot or captain. But, since the project has been opened for public service, Metro 1 has never been operated remotely on its entire 11.4-km corridor.

During early 2016, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) had received nod to have driverless metro. At the moment, two corridors of DMRC have systems similar to CBTC. The corridors in Delhi having such a system are the 58-km-long Majlish Park-Shiv Vihar and the 38-km-long Janakpuri (West)- Botanical Garden.

Globally, there are 27 countries that operates driverless metro trains.
