The discussion for finance of planned Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavli Metro line have already begun.
The World Bank (WB) is likely to finance the planned Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavli Metro line and initial discussions have already started. "Discussions to implement the Metro IV project, with financial assistance from the WB, are headed in a positive direction," said a Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) official. Of the estimated Rs 14,549 crore project cost, 48% will be borrowed from the WB. The balance 52% will be borne by the state government and the development authority. But the Maharashtra government as well as MMRDA are awaiting formal correspondence from the Department of Economic Affairs (Union government) to formalise the loan agreement.
This 33 km line will have 32 stations and a car depot has been proposed on a plot of 30 hectares at Owale on Ghodbunder Road in Thane. "At present, this Metro project is awaiting the state cabinet's nod. The file is with the state Urban Development Department, which will put it up for the state cabinet approval," said the official. The clearance from the cabinet was expected in August, but now it has been pushed forward.
Once cleared, the bidding process to construct the line will be initiated. The ground work has already commenced for two other Metro rails – Dahisar-Andheri and Dahisar-DN Nagar. Earlier, the Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavli line was planned as partially underground, with an estimated cost of Rs 19,097 crore. The deadline likely to be set to complete and launch the project for public use is 2021.
