The Nagpada police on Saturday arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly stalking and threatening a 21-year-old girl. The arrestee, Mohammad Sarik Sanawwar Qureshi, is a resident of Rajan Pada in Nalasopara (E).

According to the police, the complainant lives with her family at Bapti Road in Nagpada and Qureshi works as a welder in a shop opposite her building. They have known each other for the last eight months.

"Six months ago, Qureshi sent her a letter with his mobile number written in it through a boy. After two weeks, the girl called him. Soon they became good friends and started talking to each other regularly," said an officer from the Nagpada police station.

He added that later the girl's family decided to get her married to a Malwani-based youth. In January, the girl stopped talking to Qureshi and started avoiding his repeated calls.

"She then told Qureshi about her marriage. He asked her to elope with him, but the girl refused. Qureshi then threatened her that he would inform her family about their relationship, and would throw acid on her, if she married someone else. The victim confided in her brother and the family lodged a police complaint on March 21," said the officer.

Qureshi was nabbed from the Kamathipura area and was booked under sections 354D (stalking) and 506 (II) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He was later remanded in to judicial custody till April 2.
