Chhaya Bhutia, a resident of Ganesh building at MP Mills compound in Tardeo, was married to Kailas around a month and a half ago.
In the midst of counselling by the police and desperate pleas by her family and neighbours, a 19-year-old woman allegedly leaped to death from the 14th floor of a Tardeo building early on Friday morning.
The teenager, said to be depressed owing to a forced marriage, had tried to commit suicide earlier as well, the police said.
Chhaya Bhutia, a resident of Ganesh building at MP Mills compound in Tardeo, was married to Kailas around a month and a half ago. She was not happy with the marriage, the police said.
According to the locals, Chhaya had tried to jump off the building two days ago, but her family talked her out of it.
Friday’s incident took place around 4 am. A local, Rajesh Maru, saw Chhaya scale the scaffolding put up on the under-construction building to reach the 14th floor and raised an alarm. She had removed the toilet windowpane in her house to get out, cops said. As her family and the locals tried to persuade her against the step, the police arrived shortly and began counselling her. But she reportedly said, “I am fed with this. I don’t want to live” before leaping off in front of the whole neighbourhood.
“We rushed her to Nair hospital but she was declared dead on arrival. We will record statements of witnesses and family,” said a police officer.
The police have registered an accidental death report and are conducting an inquiry to ascertain if it was an accidental fall or a suicide.
