Massive fire breaks out in Mumbai's Bandra east during demolition drive; Harbour line stretch closed

A fire broke out on Thursday afternoon in Behrampada area of Bandra East in Mumbai.

Preliminary reports said that smoke was billowing from the slums in the area. A fire official told DNA that the fire broke out during a demolition drive that was carried out by the BMC. "It was part of clearing encroachments along the Tansa pipeline following a Bombay High Court order," he said.

Sixteen fire engines and several water tankers were sent to the spot. The fire was declared a Level IV disaster, the second most serious category in disaster management.

The Western Railway announced that despite the fire, all services, including Harbour Line have not been suspended. However, an NDTV report suggested that trains have been stopped on the Andheri-Wadala stretch of the Harbour Line, one the city's three main local lines, because the fire is close to the tracks.

No casualties have been reported so far, a fire brigade official said. However, two people suffered minor injured out of which one was a fireman. Both have been administered treatment.
