Mumbai: Fire at chemical unit in Taloja, no casualties

A major fire broke out at Memba Chemical Industries, a chemical manufacturing unit in Taloja MIDC on Monday afternoon at 1.20 pm. Six fire tenders from MIDC, Panvel and Kharghar was used to douse the fire by 4 pm.

A major fire broke out at Memba Chemical Industries, a chemical manufacturing unit in Taloja MIDC on Monday afternoon at 1.20 pm. Six fire tenders from MIDC, Panvel and Kharghar was used to douse the fire by 4 pm. 

The fire broke out when some chemical was being unloaded from a tanker and there was a short circuit at the same time, police said.

According to police, the fire has been doused but the cooling process is going on which will take another two to three hours.

There has not been any casualties in the fire, said an official from Taloja police station. “Our officials are present at the site and they have not entered inside the building as the cooling process is going. We will know more once the cooling process is complete,” said the official.

Last month, another chemical manufacturing unit was engulfed in fire and two workers were killed in the incident.
