Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone VI, Sangramsingh Nishandar, has ordered an assistant commissioner of police (ACP) rank officer to inquire into the allegation that the cops at Chunnabhati station beat up a 30-year-old domestic help recently, after picking her up in connection with a theft case.

According to a complaint filed by a maid association on August 13, Geeta More was picked up by the Chunabhatti police after her employer complained that jewellery worth Rs2.5 crore was missing from his residence. She was then brutally assaulted by four policemen and a woman officer in the lock-up.

Social activist Jyoti Raut, who is helping More, said, "She was beaten up by a female police inspector. Later, men joined in. The police were completely wrong in confining a woman and sassaulting her." She added, "Interestingly, the jewellery that was believed to be stolen was actually misplaced by More's employer and was found later in the house itself. More was beaten so badly that she could not even walk properly." Raut demanded suspension of the police personnel involved in the case.

Acting on the complaint, Nishandar has now ordered an inquiry into the matter. "There was a complaint from the maid association. The members said they didn't want Chunabhatti police to carry out the inquiry. That is why, I have ordered the ACP to look into the matter," he said.

Nishandar added, "There are allegations that the maid was assaulted by policemen. However, we have received the preliminary medical report and it does not show any injury, swelling or contusion."
