Hundreds of landline telephone and broadband connections have gone kaput in Ghatkopar and Chembur areas, thanks to cable laying works undertaken by private telecommunication service providers. MTNL has decided to file a complaint with the police to look into the matter.

"For the past couple of days, the phone lines are dead in Ghatkopar and Chembur. When I went to enquire about the reason behind the disruption in services, I found out that MTNL cables were cut due to a private company's cable-laying work for 4G services," said Siva Sankar, a resident of Chembur.

MTNL authorities were unable to provide the number of connections that have been affected, but confirmed that the number is large enough as some residential and commercial blocks have been facing huge problems because of it.

"Our office work came to a standstill earlier this week as the MTNL Internet connection got affected," said Sankar, who works in a firm situated at Ghatkopar's LBS Road. In at least two locations — around R City Mall on LBS Road in Ghatkopar (West) and Ghatla village in Chembur (East) — MTNL linesmen are still repairing damaged cables.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the private telecommunications player had assured that they will ensure MTNL consumers of uninterrupted services.

However, the MTNL said it will go ahead with its decision to file police complaint. "Wherever the lines are damaged by external agencies, we will lodge complaint with the police station concerned," said M Nagarajappa, general manager, Eastern 1 Zone of MTNL, confirming complaints in the area.
